Christopher Marlowe's tragic masterpiece Edward II makes a special reappearance at the National Theatre this year, with audiences promised a completely new perspective on the gripping story.

Exploring themes as diverse as power, sexual obsession and eroticism, the tale of a king who treats his realm as if it were a playground has enthralled and delighted theatregoers over the years.

The newest incarnation of the play is directed by Joe Hill-Gibbons, fresh from his acclaimed directorship of Penelope Skinner's new play The Village Bike at the Royal Court.

Other notable cast and creatives include Royal Shakespeare Company stalwart Ben Addis, Twenty Twelve TV star Alex Beckett and well-known theatrical talent Kirsty Bushell.

Audiences can also expect lavish sets created by Lizzie Clachan and moody lighting envisioned by James Farncombe.
