Shanghai Ballet debuts in London

Balletomanes will undoubtedly want to book tickets for what promises to be an astonishing event, as the Shanghai Ballet will debut its first ever performance in London with a production of Jane Eyre.

Based on the much-loved novel by Charlotte Bronte, the story follows the love life and growth into adulthood of its eponymous character and tackles a number of key themes, including classism, sexuality, religion, and proto-feminism. To witness it in ballet form is something truly special.

With the five performances due to commence from Wednesday August 14th, it marks the Shanghai Ballet company's first foray into the West End.

The innovative re-imagining takes liberties with the story somewhat, putting the character of Mr Rochester's mad wife Bertha Mason firmly centre stage despite the fact she spends much of the novel famously locked in the attic.

However, such changes are only likely to delight even the most loyal fanatic of Bronte's original tale as it allows the company to delve deeper into a story that has already been explored by literary critics down the centuries.

Audiences can count on extremely strong performances from the three leads - Ji Pingping (Jane), Fan Xiaofeng (Bertha), Wu Husheng (Rochester) - while the stunning dancing is only complemented by magnificent sets, atmospheric lighting, dramatic choreography and incredible costume design.

Performances will run at the London Coliseum Theatre for four days only from August 14th until the 17th, with an additional matinee on the Saturday. Balcony and upper circle seats can be purchased for as little as £20, while dress circle and stalls tickets are £50 and £60 respectively.
