Category: Music & Theatre Dates: Wednesday, 07 August 2013 to Sunday, 22 September 2013 Luxury London hotel guests will be able to see a new production of the iconic stage musical West Side Story at Sadler's Wells from August 7th to September 22nd 2013. Recognised as one of the greatest and most beloved stage shows of all time, the emotional and exuberant Broadway spectacular is returning to Sadler's Wells for the first time since its triumphant 50th anniversary run in 2008, which proved a sell-out success. Featuring a book by Arthur Laurents, a score by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story is an updated version of William Shakespeare's classic love story Romeo and Juliet, relocated to the Upper West Side of New York in the 1950s. It explores the rivalry between two street gangs - the Puerto Rican Sharks and the Polish-American Jets - and the doomed love affair that blossoms between Jet gang member Tony and Maria, the sister of the Sharks' leader. The soundtrack features some of the most famous songs ever written for the stage, including instantly recognisable tunes such as Maria, America, Tonight and I Feel Pretty. Debuting on Broadway in 1957, West Side Story's place in cultural history was cemented four years later with the release of Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins' film adaptation, which won ten Academy Awards, including best picture. Joey McKneely's energetic new stage production of the dance musical retains Robbins' original and iconic choreography, as brought to life by a hugely talented cast, while conductor and composer Donald Chan will lead the live orchestra in their performance of Bernstein's beloved score. This iconic tale of romance could provide a perfect evening's entertainment for guests at The Montague on the Gardens Hotel who are enjoying a Night to Remember package. Designed especially for couples, the deal includes two nights accommodation in the room or suite of your choice, plus traditional English breakfasts each day, a complimentary bottle of Champagne and a romantic candlelit dinner for two, plus a free copy of Bea Tollman’s A Life in Food cookbook.
