20140205 St Patrick's Day in London: A guide

  • Category: Art & Culture
  • Date: Sunday, 16 March 2014

St Patrick's Day is approaching and, all across the UK, Irish communities are already gearing up for one of the biggest party events of the year. London is no exception. Determined not to be left out, the organisers are preparing the usual festivities, although we can always expect one or two surprises.

Stay at The Montague on the Gardens to be as close as possible to the action, and be sure to attend all the exciting events below.

St Patrick's Day Parade

This is undoubtedly the highlight of the weekend. Taking place on March 16th, you can expect to see all manner of participants from the Emerald Isle taking part. See if you can count all 32 of the Irish counties - they will all be represented, usually in some form of fancy dress. There will be floats, music and plenty of street theatre to keep everyone entertained.

St Patrick's Day Festival

After the marching is done, the parade traditionally dissolves into an entertainment spectacular in the centre of Trafalgar Square, with dancing, comedy, film and cuisine to sample - all originating from Ireland, of course. The theme this year is dance fest, so attendees can expect a fusion of Irish dancing with many other styles, reflecting London's multicultural nature.

After the party

There's no reason for the fun to stop after the entertainment has died down. Head straight to your nearest Irish pub and order a Guinness or Irish coffee with which you can while away the evening, enjoying the carnival atmosphere. Even the most traditional venues like to get in on the action, so expect lots of green decor for the special day.

Finally, head back to your luxurious suite at The Montague on the Gardens, where you can settle in with a Winter Warmer Special, which allows you to spend a further £50 on fine food and cuisine around the hotel.
