The idea of Afternoon Tea as an important part of the daily social round is believed to have originated with Anna, Duchess of Bedford, who in the 19th century found it hard to stave off hunger during the long hours between lunch and dinner. What started as a simple snack of bread and tea proved so enjoyable that she began inviting her friends to join her, and as the occasion grew more sociable the offerings became more substantial and varied.
Afternoon Tea remains one of England’s great traditions, and here at The Montague we pay proper respect to it's ritual while offering some intriguing variations on the original. The menu naturally includes the classic Afternoon Tea served with a selection of finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with Devonshire clotted cream, preserves and tea pastries, but you’ll also find variations that add strawberries and Champagne. The range of traditional, flavoured, aromatic, fruit and green teas available, together with fine coffees and warming hot chocolate for the winter months, is long enough to satisfy the most demanding afternoon epicure.
