Sabrage Afternoon Tea

Throughout 2015

Our Sabrage Afternoon Tea is certainly unique! Learn the art of sabrage - the technique for opening a Champagne bottle with a sabre, the French Army sword. The sabre glides along the body of the bottle to break the entire neck away, leaving only the base of the bottle open and thus ready to pour.

This technique became popular in France when the army of Napoleon visited many of the aristocratic domains. It was just after the French Revolution and the sabre was the weapon of choice for Napoleon's light cavalry (the Hussars). Napoleon's spectacular victories across all Europe gave them plenty of reason to celebrate. During these parties the cavalry would open the Champagne with their sabres. Napoleon is known to have said, "Champagne! In victory one deserves it; in defeat one needs it

We have taken an old tradition and kept it alive by becoming part of the Confrérie du Sabre d’Or, which has continued to promote this dramatic event throughout the years. First you will watch a demonstration of how to open a bottle of Champagne with a sabre, before getting the chance to try it for yourself. You will then be able to enjoy your Champagne alongside a delicious Afternoon Tea!  £99.00 per person including a sabrage certificate to show your friends and family!

A Life in Food - Chopped Steak

I came up with this variation many years ago, a hamburger with a little twist which we served in The Palazzo restaurant at The Towers. I've been told by meat lovers that it's a preferred way to get the full flavour of the meat, as one uses the finest sirloin or rib eye beef, hand chopped and served in the shape of a sirloin steak. It is simple and delicious. This should always be cooked in a very hot cast iron skillet in order to maintain maximum flavour. Beatrice Tollman, President & Founder. Price £23.


Free flowing Champagne Afternoon Tea

Put a little sparkle into your Afternoon Tea. Right now at The Montague we are offering free flowing Champagne. Starting at 12.30pm on Sundays for £59.00 per person, guests will enjoy as much Champagne as they please while they relax in the conservatory with their delicious afternoon treats including sandwiches, scones, pastries and cakes.

Easter Sunday

Join us in the Blue Door Bistro to enjoy a well-deserved Easter lunch, featuring our roast leg of lamb, carved from the trolley and live music.  For both kids and the young at heart alike, no Easter party is complete without an al fresco egg hunt! Before lunch, come and join us on the wood-deck for our annual children's Easter egg hunt with prizes galore for the lucky winners! £35.00 per person.


Chelsea Flower Show

19th - 23rd May

The Montague on the Gardens will be celebrating the world's most famous flower show with our floral afternoon teas overlooking the blooming Bedford Gardens. Featuring such delights as lavender cupcakes. Accompanied by our delicious Twinning  teas , this is a treat not to be missed. Take home your very own red carnation plant pot as a memento of your day. Asparagus Week

19th – 25th May

The first shoots of the British asparagus season have sprouted, however the season is very short, so eat it while you can! With dishes such as poached asparagus with duck egg, lightly baked with Parma ham and hollandaise or asparagus soup, there is something for everyone to enjoy with this most versatile of vegetables. Life In Food  Prawn and Lobster Cocktail

Heads of state and other global figures are often guests at our hotels throughout the world. During her frequent visits to the US, Mrs Thatcher was a regular visitor to The Chesterfield Hotel Palm Beach; one of the dishes that she enjoyed at a lunch at our home was the prawn and lobster cocktail, that makes such fabulous use of the fresh local seafood. A deliciously summery dish to treat guests with. £9.00.

Life in Food Prawn Stroganoff

With a thriving interest for recipes I found it fascinating over the years to gather recipes from the famous 'Gourmet' magazines from the 60s and 70s. I realised that great food never goes out of fashion. I came across this recipe in a 1972 issue, and with a little embellishment and a couple of personal touches it's now a firm favourite with guests: simple, and utterly delicious.£19.00.

Montague Picnics

Summer is here and what better way to enjoy it than by stretching out on a blanket and dining al fresco in one of London's magnificent royal parks. With a hamper to pamper filled to the brim with divine summer produce from smoked salmon, homemade breads, cheeses and sweet English strawberries. Perfect also for taking to The Royal Regatta!
