Nelson Mandela 90th Birthday Concert

Event: Nelson Mandela 90th Birthday Concert
Date: June 27th 2008

Following the unveiling of a Nelson Mandela statue in London on August 29th 2007, the announcement of a concert to celebrate the 90th birthday of the human rights activist and revolutionary political figure was made.

This June, people residing at luxury London hotel the Montague on the Gardens can watch the concert when it is held on June 27th 2008 in London's Hyde Park.

Final acts for the event have yet to be confirmed but among the rumoured performers are surviving Queen members Roger Taylor and Brian May.

When the statue was unveiled in Parliament Square, Mr Mandela was reported to have been "visibly moved" after the prime minister described the feature as a "beacon of hope", according to the Times.

Mr Mandela added that the statue represented not just one man but all people who have resisted oppression.

The concert in Hyde Park, close to luxury London hotel the Montague on the Gardens will be the starting point for Mr Mandela's celebrations of his entry into his nonagenarian years.

It will be held in aid of the 46664 Aids fundraising campaign. 46664 was Mr Mandela's prison number during his incarceration on Robben Island.
