Event: Baishakhi Mela 2008
Date: May 4th 2008
Baishakhi Mela - or Bengali New Year - is taking place on May 4th 2008 and should prove to be an interesting day out for those staying at luxury London hotel the Montague on the Gardens.
London's Baishakhi Mela first took place in 1997 and now has the honour of being the largest open-air Asian festival in Europe as well as the largest Bengali festival outside of Bangladesh.
The UK's second-largest street festival, Baishakhi Mela attracts roughly 80,000 visitors annually.
Visitors staying at luxury hotel the Montague can watch the parade which begins at 11:30 at Allen Gardens and wends its way down Brick Lane to Weavers Fields.
Expect to see colourful and sparkling traditional dress, large floats depicting such animals as tigers and elephants and fantastic Bengali cuisine.
Restaurants make up batches of curries and other dishes while children can enjoy the fairs, face painting and street performers.
The Jatra - a musical opera with links to Bollywood is definitely worth watching and offers a "lovely cultural insight in to the stylised Jatra from Bangladesh".
