Event: Turandot at the Royal Opera House
Date: December 22nd until January 23rd
Londoners will be treated to an oriental fairytale this winter when Giacomo Puccini's final opera Turandot is played out on the Royal Opera House stage.
Princess Turandot is a hard woman to please.
She has many men keen to take her hand in marriage, but she sets prospective suitors three riddles they must answer before she will agree to a wedding.
Those who fail to solve her puzzles pay with their life as punishment.
However, one person, Prince Calaf, avoids the failures of countless others and answers the riddles correctly to win her hand in marriage.
The ice-cold princess is shaken by the young man's achievement and begs her father not to give her away to someone she does not know and Calaf offers her an escape route: learn his real name by dawn the next day and he will take his own life.
Liu, a young slave girl, knows the mysterious stranger's real identity and kills herself to avoid giving it away to Turnadot's henchmen.
The conclusion of the opera sees Calaf kiss the princess, giving her the first feeling of physical intimacy in her life.
Moved, she turns to her subjects and declares the handsome prince's name is Love.
The Royal Opera House will be brought to life with wonderful music and graceful dancing, delivering a story of love and intimacy.
Couples on a weekend break can enjoy their own loving moments in the romantic setting of a suite at the luxury London hotel the Montague on the Gardens.
