Despite being one of the most prominent artists of the post-war era, Alex Katz has never had an exhibition dedicated to his work at the National Portrait Gallery.

This year though, that wrong will be righted with a display of some of his most famous pieces, together with examples of his more obscure work.

The highlight of the showcase will be a new portrait of Ana Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue.

Painted minus her signature sunglasses against a yellow background, the piece represents a departure from Katz' usual style.

Other standout works include a portrait of the New York intelligentsia at a cocktail party entitled One Flight Up.

The exhibition will be divided into two rooms, with the second area dedicated to paintings of the artist's close friends and family.

For many, this will be the first opportunity they have had to see Alex Katz' work up close and personal.
