Venice: Canaletto and His Rivals at the National Gallery

Event: Venice: Canaletto and His Rivals at the National Gallery
Date: October 13th to January 16th 2011

The most complete collection of Venetian paintings since a display in the city itself over 40 years ago is set to go on display at the National Gallery in London later this year.

Beginning on October 13th, Venice: Canaletto and His Rivals will be shown in the Sainsbury Wing of the gallery and feature around 50 loans from public and private collections in Europe and North America.

As the title suggests, many of the works will be those of celebrated Venetian artist Canaletto - or Giovanni Antonio Canal - who was born in the city in 1697 and went on to paint intricately-detailed images of life in Venice, such as The Stonemason's Yard and Regatta on the Grand Canal, with the latter being produced in collaboration with an organised workshop.

Canaletto's work will be shown alongside those of his rivals in each of the rooms used for the exhibition, with paintings by Michele Marieschi, Luca Carlevarijs, Francesco Guardi and Bernardo Bellotto all set to be displayed, alongside examples from a number of lesser-known painters.

The exhibition, which will be in place until the middle of January next year, could form part of a cultural weekend to be enjoyed by those staying at luxury London hotel the Montague on the Gardens.

Booking the Get More From Your Stay Package gives guests a complimentary pair of tickets to the British Museum, or, alternatively, a bottle of chilled champagne, traditional afternoon tea for two or a two-course barbeque meal.ADNFCR-596-ID-800020191-ADNFCR
