The British Museum, founded in 1753, is the world’s first national public museum – and it has become increasingly popular.  Visitor numbers have grown from around 5,000 a year in the 18th century to nearly 6 million today!

As this world class attraction is on our doorstep, The Montague on the Gardens makes the perfect base from which to visit their spectacular exhibitions.  We’ve therefore put together a special package to help you make the most of these uniquely fascinating events.

Special Exhibitions include:

  • Grayson Perry: The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman (6th October 2011 - 19th February 2012) An installation of Grayson Perry's new works shown alongside objects made by unknown men and women throughout history from the British Museum's collection. Looking at afterlife from the imaginary world.

  • Hajj journey to the heart of Islam (26th January - 15th April 2012) Charting the deepley personal journey of the pilgrimage to Mecca which every Muslim must make at least once in their lifetime.
  • Shakespeare: staging the world (19th July - 25th November 2012) Gain a unique insight into the ermergence of London as a world city, through the perspective of Shakespearean plays. The exhibition explored the pivotal role his works played in shaping a new sense of national identity.

  • Landscape, heroes and folktales: German Romantic prints and drawings (until 9th April 2012)
  • Manga at the British Museum: Drawings by Hoshino Yukinobu (until 9th April 2012)
  • The cost of living in Roman and modern Britain (until 15th April 2012)
  • Mine to Medals: The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Medals (until 9th September 2012)
