The British Museum, founded in 1753, is the world’s first national public museum – and it has become increasingly popular. Visitor numbers have grown from around 5,000 a year in the 18th century to nearly 6 million today!
As this world class attraction is on our doorstep, The Montague on the Gardens makes the perfect base from which to visit their spectacular exhibitions. We’ve therefore put together a special package to help you make the most of these uniquely fascinating events.
- Sculptures from West Africa (4th March – 6th June 2010). Presents exquisite examples of brass, copper, stone and terracotta sculpture from the West African Kingdom of Ife, crafted between the 12th and 15th centuries. View an introductory video on the Kingdom of Ife exhibition.
- Italian Renaissance drawings (22nd April – 25th July 2010). Features 100 exquisite drawings by Italian artists during the critical period of the Renaissance, from 1400 to 1510, including Leonardo da Vinci, Fra Angelico, Jacopo and Gentile Bellini, Botticelli, Carpaccio, Filippo Lippi, Mantegna, Michelangelo, Verrocchio and Titian.
- Journey through the afterlife: The Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead (4th November 2010 - 6th March 2011). Explains how the ancient Book of the Dead was thought to guide the deaceased through the dangers of the undereworld, utlimately ensuring eternal life. The book is a compilation of spells, illustatrated with depictions of the underworld. Objects include manuscripts on papyru and linen, funerary figurines, amulets, jewellery, statues and coffins.
