A great cigar, many would argue, demands a great Cognac. It’s a combination as old as Napoleon and Josephine, and equally challenging; thankfully the expert barman in the Terrace Bar is on hand to advise. He also has an excellent selection for you to choose from – there’s everything from a modest Hennessy VS right up to an extravagant Rémy Martin Louis X111.

With summer finally in full swing, The Montague on the Gardens opens its doors to their sunny Wood Deck and Terrace daily for alfresco dining throughout the warmer months. A great barbecue is one of life’s simplest but most exquisite pleasures. However, in central London, where private gardens are very much a luxury, it’s generally an all too rare occurrence.

Adjacent to the British Museum, The Montague on the Gardens hides a secret – looking up at the imposing façade who would guess that hidden away at the rear of the property is a tranquil oasis of private gardens surrounded by elegant Georgian houses? There’s an ample and picturesque wood deck, plus a shady terrace – the setting is so serene and peaceful it’s hard to believe you are actually in the heart of the capital.

At £8.50 per person for a quick one-course meal, £15.50 for two courses and £19.50 for three courses, the wood deck and terrace will once again become the place to be for summer alfresco dining. Barbecued lunch is served daily from 12.30pm to 2-30pm with succulent chicken from the spit roast; plus a fine selection of meats and fish, including burgers, steak and tuna.

Enter through its marble corridor where the walls are adorned with a faux suede fabric and a series of original prints strategically placed to create the 'wow' factor. On the floor is crème marfil and brown maron marble tiles and under-floor heating. Ceiling spots set the scene for that perfect setting.

The Suite dining room houses a table that can accommodate eight for dinner or use it as your private board room whilst away from your office. Your dinner can be catered from your own private fully fitted kitchen.

The marble-floored master bedroom has lovely bevel-edged mirrors. The bathroom includes a chic copper bath for two and a stylish water trough to fill up the enormous tub. While sitting in the tub you can watch your flat-screen television. Or listen to your I pod docking station. The elegant Red Carnation touch is everywhere. The sumptuous towels are from Christies of Manchester, a famous brand stocked by Harrods; the Montague 'M' is embroidered with outline stitching on the fluffy duvet; the comfy pillows provide the best night's sleep on your Egyptian cotton 200% fine combed bed linen. In what will surely come to be regarded as a highpoint in the museum’s illustrious history, from 13 September 2007, The British Museum is hosting The First Emperor, an insight into China’s First Emperor, Qin Shihuangdi.
